WEEK 16: USA College Player Update

 6/7/2010

WEEK 16: Update for Team USA Alumni College Players

*Super Regionals gearing up; MLB Draft starts tonight!

*We will be reporting on how the USA alumni fares in the MLB Draft over the next few days, so be sure to check back for that info…

  • 1st: UCLA sophomore Gerrit Cole pitched like an ace in regional play against Kent State Friday night; ESPN’s Keith Law has been very high on Cole since the beginning of the season; In a recent article, Law says, “There are some top names for next year’s class making the news right now, too, including UCLA right-hander Gerrit Cole. The former Yankees draft pick allowed just one hit in five scoreless innings Friday, striking out seven and issuing only one walk in another dominating performance. Cole reached the mid-90s regularly — and with ease, as I witnessed earlier this spring. When his breaking ball is being thrown with command, he’s unhittable. Cole could land somewhere in the top five next spring.” …’nuff said
  • 2nd: Coastal Carolina junior Scott Woodward did not want the season to end; so he simply put Coastal on his back as he went 6-for-14 with 2 2B’s, 1 3B, 6 BB’s and 6 SB’s; the result of his otherworldly OBP was a total of 8 scored runs, 1 of those coming from a walk, subsequent steal, and then the game-tying run with the Chants facing elimination with 2 out in the bottom of the ninth…
  • 3rd: Arizona State sophomore Riccio Torrez has been playing like an upperclassman all year, but he really turned it on in the post-season; Torrez went 7-for-11 with 4 2B’s, 1 RBI and 4 SB’s; on the year, Torrez is batting .404 with 9 HR’s, 51 RBI’s, and 20 SB’s to go with a .492 OBP; the only criticism of his game is an 18-to-39 walk/strikeout rate; look for a spectacular junior campaign in 2011…
  • 4th: Coastal Carolina junior Cody Wheeler pitched a complete game shutout in his lone post-season appearance; Wheeler faced 32 batters, fanning 6 while walking just 2; on the year, Wheeler was 11-0 with a 3.70 ERA, 107 K’s and 32 BB’s in 104.2 IP; his name hasn’t been mentioned in first round discussions, but it’s a safe bet he’ll be off the board early on Tuesday…
  • 5th: UCLA sophomore Trevor Bauer gave up just 1 earned run on 7 hits in 8 IP to notch his 10th win of the year against defending National Champs LSU; Bauer fanned 11 and walked 2 and now sports an elite 135-35 K/BB ratio over 109.1 IP this year; this time next year, Bauer’s name will be frequently mentioned among those players who are expected to go early in the 1st round…
  • 6th: Miami junior Chris Hernandez has been mentioned frequently lately as a supplemental 1st round to early 2nd round pick; Hernandez isn’t doing anything to slip, as his latest post-season outing was a gem; notching the first post-season win of his career, the Miami lefty tossed 6 scoreless innings while allowing just 3 hits, fanning 7 and walking just 1 of the 21 batters he faced; a two-and-a-half hour rain delay ended his masterful night; on the year, he’s 9-3 with a 2.83 ERA to go with 102 K’s versus 31 BB’s in 95.1 IP
  • 7th: UNC junior Matt Harvey looks to have an exciting night tonight, as it’s expected he’ll be drafted among the first 10-to-15 picks; this past week Harvey solidified his case with a win, pitching 6 innings and allowing 2 runs on 4 hits, while fanning 9 and walking 3…
  • Getting very difficult to finish this update… THE DRAFT IS LIVE!
  • 8th: Auburn junior Hunter Morris–> 2 HR’s…
  • 9th: CS Fullerton junior Christian Colon–> 2 HR’s… Mayo says Colon goes 1.4 to KC, we shall see in a minute… HE DID! KC took Colon 4th overall, huge surprise!
  • That’s it for this week! There’s so much more that we just can’t get to, but you should be able to get a good idea of who was hot and who was not with the WEEKLY PLAYER STATS (posted below and on our website); we also track the players yearly  cumulative season statistics (updated every Monday evening); thanks for tuning in and check back often as we keep turning out new content…

WEEK 15: USA College Player Update

5/31/2010

WEEK 15: Team USA Alumni College Player Update

*We wrapped up all of the conference tournaments over the weekend; next up is Regionals, Super Regionals & the College World Series; the MLB Draft falls in the middle of that, and we started our draft coverage just a few days ago with a list of draft-eligible USA players

  • 1st: Although Southern Nevada phenom Bryce Harper isn’t listed in the weekly stats below, he did compete in 2 games of the JUCO World Series over the past week; Harper went a combined 3-for-6 with 2 walks, 2 SB’s and 6 runs scored, striking out twice…
  • 2nd: Rice junior Rick Hague came alive this past week; Hague went a combined 9-for-17 with 2 2B’s, 3 HR’s, 5 RBI’s, 1 SB and a total of 10 runs scored…
  • 3rd: Hawaii sophomore Kolten Wong put the Rainbows on his back en-route to winning the WAC championship; Wong went 10-for-20 with a 2B, 3B, 3 HR’s, 8 RBI’s and 6 BB’s with no K’s…
  • 4th: Texas Tech junior Chad Bettis with 10 K’s over 7.1 IP
  • 5th: UCLA sophomore Gerrit Cole with 11 K’s over 6.2 IP
  • 6th: TCU freshman Matthew Purke with 14 K’s over 7 IP
  • 7th: The Citadel junior Asher Wojciechowski earned 2 wins over 2 starts this past week; in a combined 16 innings of work, Wojo fanned 16 while walking just 2…
  • 8th: Vanderbilt sophomore Sonny Gray combined on a shutout to notch the win; Gray pitched 7 innings, fanning 8 and walking just 1 batter…
  • 9th: Mississippi junior Drew Pomeranz also combined on a shutout; Pomz fanned 7 over 7 innnings with just 1 walk… it’s like deja vu…

WEEK 14: USA College Player Update

5/24/2010

WEEK 14: USA Baseball Alumni College Player Update

* That’s a wrap for the regular season for every college that participates in a conference tournament; conference tournaments kick-off this week and coverage for the upcoming MLB Draft is starting to crank up everywhere…

WEEK 14 News & Notes in “9-Innings”

  • 1st: Southern Nevada phenom Bryce Harper added to his growing legend this past weekend as he hit for the cycle in one game, then notched a four HR game to propel CSN into the JUCO World Series; his total stat line for the weekend: 18-for-22 with 5 2B’s, 2 3B’s, 5 HR’s and 18 RBI’s; there’s no question Harper is going 1.1, the only question that remains is how much it’s going to cost the Nationals…
  • 2nd: The only other player to log a multi-HR week was Tennessee junior Blake Forsythe; Forsythe has had a largely disappointing season, batting .286 compared to his sophomore campaign where he hit .347; scouts still like the tools and most think he will get drafted high enough in June to pull him away from his senior year at UT as the power is still there; Forsythe has 15 HRs and 57 RBI’s on the year…
  • 3rd: Auburn junior Hunter Morris dropped 30 pounds in the offseason and completely turned around his college baseball career; a Freshman All-American and SEC Freshman of the Year in 2008, Morris’s sophomore campaign took a U-turn as his AVG went from .351 to .282 and his strikeouts nearly doubled from 26 to 50; his offseason conditioning has paid dividends and he is now enjoying his best offensive year, batting .398 with 20 HR’s and 67 RBI’s and shaving his strikeouts down slightly; Morris was recently announced as one of the 25 semifinalists for the Dick Howser Trophy Award; most online sources have Morris going off the draft board in the first 2 rounds…
  • 4th: Hawaii sophomore Kolten Wong put the Rainbows on his back this past weekend as they fought for a WAC Tournament berth; Wong went 11-for-22 with 3 2B’s, 1 3B, 1 HR, 6 RBI’s and a SB…
  • 5th: TCU freshman Matthew Purke remained perfect after another solid outing for the Horned Frogs; in 5-innings of work, Purke allowed 1 run on 5 hits, fanning 5 and walking none; Purke is 11-0 on the year and is just shy of the century mark in K’s with 99 in 82IP; Purke was limited to 5 innings to keep him fresh for the upcoming conference tournament; he talked about the game and “finding” his changeup again in this article
  • 6th: Miami junior Chris Hernandez took a tough loss in an otherwise solid outing against ACC rival Virginia; Hernandez tossed 5.2 innings, allowing 1 earned run on 5 hits while fanning 9 and walking 5; on the year, Hernandez sports a 2.94 ERA with an 8-3 record, and 91 K’s in 82.2 IP…
  • 7th: UCLA sophomore Trevor Bauer may be the best kept secret in college baseball in regards to baseball card prospectors (recent gold refractor sales all hover around $20); this is a guy Keith Law says breaks the Top 10 in the 2011 MLB Draft and whose current stats bests that of teammate Gerrit Cole (who is the early frontrunner for 1.1 in 2011); Bauer is 9-3 on the year with a 2.95 ERA, 116 K’s in 94.2 IP and just 29 BB’s; Cole is 8-2, 3.41, 113 K’s in 89.2 IP and 43 BB’s…
  • 8th: Arizona State freshman Jake Barrett has thrived in the relief role this year; Barrett is 2-0 with a 3.29 ERA, 2 Saves, 42 K’s and 9 BB’s in 27.2 IP and has combined on 2 shutouts; he appeared twice this past weekend over 3.1 innings and fanned 7 of the 10 batters he faced, allowing no runs while giving up just 1 hit…
  • 9th: CS-Fullerton junior Christian Colon looks like a lock to go in the 1st round of this year’s MLB Draft; Keith Law ranks him #19, BA at #12, PGUSA at #7/#11 (2 mocks); Colon’s polished defense and pure hitting ability projects him to be on the fast-track to the show and are the primary reasons for the predictions; Colon got off to a slow start this year after breaking his ankle over the summer as the captain of the Team USA Baseball National Team (he was also named BA’s Summer Player of the Year in 2009), but has consistently produced since then…
  • That’s it for this week!

WEEK 13: USA College Player Update

WEEK 13: Team USA Alumni College Player Update

*A few teams took the week off for exams, so you’ll notice no stats for some players; most schools begin their conference tournaments this week…

Week 13 News & Notes in “9-Innings”…

  • 1st: The Citadel senior Asher Wojciechowski…pitched a complete game this past Friday, described as “masterful” as he allowed just 2 runs on 2 hits, fanning 13 and walking just 1 en-route to his 9th win of the year; his 13 K’s marks the 6th time this season he notched 10+ K’s in a game, just missing 3 other times with 9 K’s; ESPN’s Keith Law has Wojo going off the draft board at #28 in his most recent Top 100 Prospects Update
  • 2nd: TCU freshman Matthew Purke enabled the Frogs to clinch the MWC Regular Season Title with a career-high 12 K’s over 6 innings against Air Force on Friday; Purke moved to a perfect 10-0 on the year, giving up just 1 run on 5 hits, fanning 12 and walking 1; Purke has 94 K’s in 77 IP on the year…
  • 3rd: UCLA sophomore Trevor Bauer shrugged off a shaky 1st inning to notch his 8th win of the year; Bauer tossed 7 innings, allowing 2 runs on 7 hits, fanning 11 and walking 6; Bauer has 5 outings this year with 10+ K’s, and his most recent propelled him to the century mark at 109 in 87.2 IP…
  • 4th: Mississippi junior Drew Pomeranz…gave up 1 run on 1 hit over 5 innings, striking out 9 and walking 7; Pomz has 121 K’s over 79.2 IP on the year; although it’s a nearly unanimous opinion that Bryce Harper is going 1.1, a recent Rotoworld article states the Nats are still looking at Pomeranz as a possibility…
  • 5th: Arizona State sophomore Riccio Torrez… had 3 RBI’s and 3 hits to help #2 ASU defeat #25 Arizona; on the week, Torrez was 7-for-14 with a 2B, 5 RBI’s and 3 SB’s; on the year, Torrez is batting 0.388 with 7 HR’s, 45 RBI’s and 13 SB’s…
  • 6th: Clemson sophomore Brad Miller notched his 5th HR as the Tigers bashed Wake Forest; over the series, Miller went 7-for-14 with a 2B, 2 HR’s and 2 RBI’s; on the year, Miller is batting 0.352 with 5 HR’s, 28 RBI’s and 8 SB’s…
  • 7th: MTSU junior Bryce Brentz…appears to be back at 100% now; on the week, Brentz was 11-for-24 with 2 HR’s, 9 RBI’s and a SB; four of those RBI’s came as the result of a grand slam on Friday
  • 8th: Rice junior Rick Hague continues to perform well, this week going 7-for-19, with 3 2B’s, 1 HR, 5 RBI’s and a SB; Hague possesses 5-tools that grade fringe-to-solid-average across the board and BA’s Aaron Fitt see’s Hague going somewhere in the 3rd round next month…
  • 9th: CS-Fullerton junior Christian Colon was instrumental in the Titans sweep of rival LBSU; over the series, Colon went 8-for-21, with a 2B, 3B, 2 HR’s, 10 RBI’s and a SB; BA projects Colon going off the draft board at #12, while Keith Law projects #19; either way, Colon is not getting out of the first round…

WEEK 12: USA College Player Update

5/10/2010

WEEK 12: USA College Player Update

*News, notes & statistical analysis for USA Baseball alumni playing in the college ranks…

  • 1st: Texas-Arlington junior Michael Choice was named Southland Conference Hitter of the Week; on the week, Choice was 5-for-11 with 2 HR’s, 8 RBI’s, and 7 BB’s; Choice now holds the UTA all-time record for HR’s and single season record for walks; he leads the Southland Conference in AVG, HR’s, and BB’s, and is tied for 2nd in RBI’s; Choice leads all of Division I baseball in walks; a couple of weeks ago, ESPN’s Keith Law ranked Choice #24 on his Top 100 Draft Prospects list (insider subscription)…
  • 2nd: Rice junior Rick Hague …was named C-USA Hitter of the Week today; “Hague slugged two home runs and four doubles for a team-leading 23 bases and a .958 slugging percentage. The Spring, Texas, native led the team with 10 RBI, 13 hits and four doubles. He scored eight times in five games and drew four walks for a .586 slugging percentage. Defensively, he was error-free in the field in 31 total chances and turned or started seven of the team’s nine double plays last week…”
  • 3rd: Santa Clara junior Tommy Medica finished a single short of a cycle last week in a matchup against WCC rival Pepperdine; on the week, Medica was 10-for-24 with 3 2B’s, 1 3B, 2 HR’s, 7 RBI’s and 2 SB’s; hard to understand the lack of attention Medica has been getting as pertains to the upcoming draft; he plays a premium position and has absolutely raked all year; could definitely be a “dark horse” if drafted in the first three rounds…
  • 4th: Florida State junior Tyler Holt followed up last week’s ACC Hitter of the Week award with another good week, going 5-for-15 with 2 2B’s, 2 HR’s, 5 RBI’s, 7 BB’s and 5 SB’s; back in February, BA ranked Holt as the #46 college prospect for this year’s draft; he’s done nothing to fall and will probably land somewhere in the early 2nd round…
  • Miami junior Chris Hernandez …has been downright filthy lately; today he was named ACC Pitcher of the Week for his role in a combined-on-shutout; “Hernandez won his team-leading seventh game of the season in Miami’s 6-0 shutout win over Barry University Friday night; in six innings of work, Hernandez allowed just two hits, did not walk a batter and struck out a career-high 13 of the 21 batters he faced; Hernandez recorded multiple strikeouts in five of his six innings, including striking out five of the first seven batters he faced and five of the last six…”
  • San Diego senior A.J. Griffin dominated conference rival Portland this past weekend en-route to his third straight weekly double-digit strikeout mark; over 8 IP, Griffin allowed 2 runs on 6 hits, striking out 12 of the 29 batters he faced while allowing just 1 walk…
  • UCLA sophomore Gerrit Cole took a no-hitter into the 6th inning on Friday in another solid outing for the ace; Cole, infamous for spurning a first-round draft pick by the Yankees in 2008, looks to be the early favorite as the #1 overall draft pick in 2011; Cole ultimately surrendered 2 runs on 3 hits over 8 innings that saw him fan 9 batters while walking only 2; it was his 3rd consecutive outing with 9+ K’s…
  • Oregon State junior Greg Peavey took a tough no-decision in his most recent outing; Peavey tossed 7.1 IP, allowing just 1 run on 5 hits, fanning 4 while walking just 1 batter; although he is just 3-2 on the year in 11 starts, his 3.02 ERA with a WHIP just above 1 suggests he is much better than his record…
  • Coastal Carolina junior Cody Wheeler moved to a perfect 9-0 on the year after hitting 10+ K’s for the 3rd time this year; Wheeler allowed 3 runs on 7 hits, fanning 10 and walking 3; during the preseason, BA ranked Wheeler as the #70 college prospect, while more recently, ESPN’s Keith Law ranked him as the #89 prospect overall…

WEEK 11: USA College Player Update

5/3/2010

WEEK 11: USA College Player News & Notes in the updated “9 Innings”…

  • 1st: Mississippi junior Drew Pomeranz is enjoying a spectacular year; this past week he hit the century mark for K’s (104) in just 68 IP; it’s likely he’ll eclipse his sophomore mark of 124 K’s (in 95 IP) as there’s 3 weeks left in the regular season; Pomz figures to go off the draft-board early and nearly all of the experts agree he’s going in the top 5; ESPN’s Keith Law says #3, BA says #3, SI says #3, and a slew of online “Mock Draft” websites (some legit, some not so much) range from 2-5; at this point, it’s a given that the Nationals will select Bryce Harper 1.1, and the next clubs to pick, in order, are Pittsburgh, Baltimore, Kansas City, and Cleveland; other than Pomeranz, the other prospects in the mix include prep RHP  Jameson Taillon, prep SS Manny Machado, prep RHP’s Karsten Whitson and A.J. Cole (most have dropped LSU RHP Anthony Ranaudo into the lower half of the Top 10 and some scouts are predicting an even further drop); now you have to figure in signability and the needs of the clubs picking after 1.1; it’s our guess that Pomz goes 1.3 to the Orioles…
  • 2nd: Florida senior Matt den Dekker had a big week, instrumental in the Gators sweep of LSU; den Dekker was 8-for-13 with a HR, 5 RBI’s and 3 SB’s; on the year he’s .356-7-30 with 16 SB’s…
  • 3rd: Santa Clara junior Tommy Medica logged one of his best week’s of the year with a 9-for-23 effort, a 2B, 3 HR’s and 9 RBI’s; Medica leads SCU in most every offensive category and most likely will be named the WCC Player of the Week; Medica now ranks in the Top 5 for the entire West Coast Conference in Average, Hits, Runs, Doubles, HR’s, RBI’s, Total Base, OBP & Slugging…
  • 4th: Arizona state sophomore Riccio Torrez had a monster week, helping the Sun Devils sweep UCLA in LA over the weekend; over a 5-game stretch, Torrez batted a combined 13-for-24, with 4 2B’s 1 HR, 8 RBI’s and 2 SB’s; for his performance, Torrez received his first PAC-10 Player of the Week Award
  • 5th: Texas Tech junior Chad Bettis logged a win, a loss, and 2 saves in four appearances that spanned 10.1 innings this week; over those 10 innings Bettis fanned 16 and walked 4…
  • 6th: San Diego senior A.J. Griffin notched his first complete game of the year last week (3rd since last year); over 9-innings, Griffin allowed 3 runs on 6 hits, fanning 10 of the 33 batters he faced while walking 2; Griffin snubbed a 34th round draft pick by the Phillies last year to return for his senior year with the Torreros; it’s unclear if he’ll fare much better this June…
  • 7th: Miami junior Chris Hernandez gave up just 1 run on 8 hits over 7 innings, fanning 4 and walking 1 against Maryland en-route to his 6th win on the year; Hernandez looks much better this year following a bumpy sophomore campaign that saw him go 7-5 with a 4.86 ERA that stood in stark contrast to an 11-0, 2.72 ERA over a brilliant freshman season; drafted in the 14th round in 2007, looks like he’ll fare better this year as BA lists him as the #88 college prospect…
  • 8th: Baylor junior Shawn Tolleson…pitched the best game of his junior year this week but ended up with an unfortunate no-decision in a tough loss to Texas; Tolleson pitched 8-innings allowing just 1 run on 6 hits while fanning 11 and walking none; this marks the 3rd time this year Tolleson logged 10+ K’s in a game and just missing one other time with 9…
  • 9th: Kansas junior T.J. Walz hit the 10+ K mark a second time this year, helping him to his 7th win; Walz flirted with a no-no tossing 8 hitless innings before giving up 2 runs on 2 hits and 3 walks; through 8 innings, Walz struck-out 11 of the 26 batters he faced…

WEEK 10: USA College Player Update

4/26/2010

WEEK 10: USA College Player News & Notes in the updated “9 Innings”…

  • 1st: College of Southern Nevada freshman Bryce Harper… well, he was just doing what he usually does this past week: 7-for-14 with a 2B, 4 HR’s, 13 RBI’s and 3-of-3 swiped bags; although a lot of people are starting to talk about make-up problems, there’s just no way the Nationals will be passing on Harper at 1.1…
  • 2nd: Today, Auburn junior Hunter Morris was announced as the “SEC Player of the Week”; Morris finished the week 8-13 at the plate as he hit 2 HR’s, 2 3B’s, 2 2B’s and 9 RBI’s; this marks the second time this season that Morris has earned Player of the Week accolades, the first time since 2001 an Auburn player has accomplished the feat…
  • 3rd: With his 13th HR of the season, Texas-Arlington junior Michael Choice tied the school record for most career home-runs at 31; with over a month left in the regular season, it’s a record he will owning outright soon enough…
  • 4th: UCLA’s ace sophomore tandem of Trevor Bauer and Gerrit Cole were both lights-out this past week; Bauer pitched a complete-game, allowing just 2 runs on 10 hits, fanning 13 of the 36 batters he faced while walking only 1, and has a total of 85 K’s in 66.2 IP; Cole tossed 8-innings allowing 2 runs on 8 hits, fanning 10 and walking none, with a season total 86 K’s in 62.1 IP; the question becomes, who goes first next year, Bauer or Cole? Cole already turned down a first-round pick by the Yankees, so will he do even better this time around?
  • 5th: UNC junior Matt Harvey was a big question mark for the Tarheels at the beginning of the year; after a lackluster sophomore campaign that left Harvey with a 5.40 ERA, the questions were reasonable; but the “real” Matt Harvey showed up this year and has been consistently dominant; the latest example occurred this past Friday as the UNC ace notched a complete-game win over Clemson, allowing just 3 runs on 6 hits, fanning 15 and walking 1; for his efforts, Harvey was announced as the ACC Pitcher of the Week
  • 6th: Vanderbilt sophomore Sonny Gray pitched a gem and got some rare run support from the Vandy lineup to move to 6-4 on the year, notching a victory against cross-state rival Tennessee; Gray was lights-out, pitching 7 innings, allowing just 1 run on a paltry 3 hits while striking out 10 and walking none; Gray was looking to go the distance as his pitch count remained low, but he was ejected after hitting the lead-off batter in the 8th inning; a warning had been issued to both teams prior to the start of the inning after UT pitchers had plunked a total of 5 Vandy batters; Gray is expected to appeal the mandatory 4-game suspension…
  • 7th: The Citadel junior Asher Wojciechowski took a tough loss this past Friday; Wojo tossed 8-innings, allowing just 2 runs on 7 hits and striking out 12 versus no walks; it was his first loss since April 25th, 2009!
  • 8th: Louisville sophomore Tony Zych gets some rare ink this week; in 2 relief appearances, Zych tossed a combined 5 innings of shutout baseball, allowing just 2 hits while striking out 11 of the 17 batters he faced; he now sports 36 K’s in 36 IP on the year…
  • 9th: Miami junior Yasmani Grandal continues to hit and hit and hit some more; on the week, he was 6-for-10 with 2 2B’s, 2 HR’s and 2 RBI’s; on the year,  he’s sporting a .432 Avg to got with 10 HR’s and 46 RBI’s; Grandal was recently ranked #11 overall on Keith Law’s ESPN Top 100 College Prospects List (subscription)…
  • That’s it for this week! There’s so much more that we just can’t get to, but you should be able to get a good idea of who was hot and who was not with the WEEKLY PLAYER STATS (see below); (we also track the players yearly  cumulative season statistics); thanks for tuning in and check back often as we keep turning out new content…

WEEK 9: USA College Player Update

4/19/2010: Week 9 news & notes here in our latest “9 Innings”…

  • 1st: It was definitely a hitter’s week and Florida freshman Austin Maddox exemplified the type of numbers that were commonly seen among batters this week; Maddox’s line was 8-for-17 with 4 2B’s, 3 HR’s and 5 RBI’s, and he extended his hitting streak to 8 games; the freshman catcher did it all and, although it’s not official, Maddox should have no problem earning another SEC Freshman of the Week award and possibly SEC Player of the Week for his efforts; Maddox now leads the Gators in AVG, H, 2B, HR and RBI…
  • 2nd: Florida State junior Tyler Holt turned it up a notch this past week going 10-for-20 with 4 2B’s, 2 HR’s, 5 RBI’s and 5 SB’s (Holt Helps FSU Hammer Duke); for the year, Holt leads all FSU batters in AVG, Hits, Runs, 2B’s, HR’s, SLG% and OB%
  • 3rd: CS Fullerton junior Christian Colon logged his first multi-HR game of the year this past week (Colon Homers Twice…) and notched 3 HR’s total over the series against UC Santa Barbara; Colon was hot, batting 6-for-13 with a 2B, 3 HR’s, 7 RBI’s; this marked the 3rd multi-HR series for Colon on the year…
  • 4th: Coastal Carolina junior Scott Woodward did it all this week; 8-for-15 with 9 Runs, a 2B, 3B, HR, 6 RBI’s and 10 SB’s (yes, ten!) while striking out only once; Woodward is completely deaf in his left ear and severely impaired in the right, a disability he credits for improving his game (Woodward has a Feel for the Game);  his athletic ability is anything but impaired and this prototypical leadoff hitter will be taking his game to the next level come June…
  • 5th: The Citadel junior Asher Wojciechowski tossed his 3rd complete game in a gem this past Friday (Wojo K’s 12); known by some as “Woz” and others as “Wojo”, he definitely had the magic as he went the distance, striking out 12 versus 3 walks, allowing only 1 earned run on 6 hits over the 9 frames;
  • 6th: Mississippi junior Drew Pomeranz pitched 7 scoreless innings, giving up only 2 hits and fanning 10 batters but he still wound up with a no-decision! This was the fourth time on the year that Pomz reached double-digit K’s and just missing with 9 K’s twice; on the year, he’s logged 90 K’s in 58 IP; Baseball America projected Pomeranz to exit the draft board at 1.6 and tabbed him as the nations #4 college prospect; Pomz recently chatted with SEC writers about his current success (SEC Q&A with Pomeranz)…
  • 7th: Southern Nevada freshman phenom Bryce Harper was hot-and-cold this past week; his Coyotes played a highly anticipated double-header on Friday and another on Saturday (The “Chosen One” Comes to Carson); in Friday’s games, Harper was 0-for7 with a R, BB and 2 K’s; a fan at the game notes that after grounding out in the second game, Harper punched a water-cooler in the dugout, illustrating his frustration with his poor performance at the plate; Saturday’s games saw a determined Harper go 3-for-7 with 3 Runs, 2 HR’s, 4 RBI’s and 1 K; Harper now sits on 17 HR’s on the year and the Coyotes have 6 games left in the regular season…
  • 8th: UNC-Wilmington senior Seth Frankoff is thriving in a relief role; the past two seasons, Frankoff started, after a freshman campaign where he mostly pitched relief peppered with a handful of starts; the transition started a bit rocky as he had a run of games during weeks 5-7 that saw him suffer some big innings; but he’s been “lights-out” for the past two weeks, allowing no runs in 5 appearances, and fanning 9 over 7 innings; this past week he combined on a shutout (Diamond Hawks Shutout Dukes)…
  • 9th: Coastal Carolina junior Cody Wheeler pitched a complete game this past Friday (Wheeler with Complete Game), his first since tossing a complete game shutout last season; over 9 innings, Wheeler allowed 2 runs on 5 hits while fanning 7 and walking 2 to stay a perfect 6-0 on the year…
  • Extra Innings: Arizona State sophomore Jordan Swagerty, 2 Saves; LSU junior Micah Gibbs 8-for-18; Miami junior Yasmani Grandal 7-for-15, 2 2B, HR, 9 RBI; Auburn junior Hunter Morris 3 HR’s (SEC Q&A with Morris); San Diego junior Victor Sanchez 3 HR’s;  Pepperdine freshman Zach Vincej 10-for-23, 2 2B’s
  • That’s it for this week! There’s so much more that we just can’t get to, but you should be able to get a good idea of who was hot and who was not with the WEEKLY PLAYER STATS ; (we also track the players yearly  cumulative season statistics); thanks for tuning in and check back often as we keep turning out new content…

WEEK 8: USA College Player Update

Miami's Yasmani Grandal

4/12/2010: WEEK 8 News & Notes here in “9-Innings”…

  • 1st: College of Southern Nevada freshman Bryce Harper continues his offensive juggernaut; a week after Harper earned national honors as the Juco player of the week, he nearly matched that performance hitting 10-of-26 with 3 HR’s, 7 RBI’s and 6 SB’s; Harper now has 15 HR’s in 128 at-bats on the year, and folks, that’s with a wood bat…
  • 2nd: Miami junior Yasmani Grandal turned in a monster offensive week; Grandal was 11-for-20 with 1 2B, 4 HR’s, 10 RBI’s; “Yaz” has really turned it up over the past few weeks (Grandal Among Nation’s Best Hitters); over the prior 3 weeks, he’s hitting 0.473 on 26-for-55 with 5 2B’s, 1 3B, 6 HR’s, 21 RBI’sand just 4 K’s; back in February, BA ranked Yasmani as the #29 college prospect for the upcoming draft; but it’s hard to see this switch-hitting catcher escaping the first round; for his efforts, Grandal was named the ACC Player of the Week…
  • 3rd: We just can’t say enough good things about Florida freshman catcher Austin Maddox; Maddox has started every game, batting cleanup, since Florida’s season opener (Maddox Adjusting Well to College Game); expectations were high before he stepped on campus and skyrocketed after he homered in his first college at-bat; he’s been a model of consistency, and this past week was no exception as he was 6-for-18 with 2 HR’s and only 1 strikeout…
  • 4th: Vanderbilt sophomore Sonny Gray has pitched masterfully much of this season, much better than his 4-4 record would suggest; on the year, Gray sports a solid 2.44 ERA and has 54K’s in 55IP, but his run support has been sorely lacking (‘Dores Can’t Get Bats Going); he logged his first complete game of the year this past Friday, giving up 3 runs, notching 8K’s versus 5 BB’s, but the hitters couldn’t manage more than the 2 runs they scored in the 1st inning…
  • 5th: UCLA sophomore ace tandem Trevor Bauer and Gerrit Cole keep turning out quality starts; both took no-decisions this past week with Bauer going 7.1IP allowing no runs with 8K’s and 1 BB, while Cole logged 6IP, allowing 1 run, fanning 10 and walking 7; Bauer and Cole headline the best starting rotation in college baseball (UCLA Baseball Soars to #1 Ranking) and are the main pieces in what’s likely culminating in a run-up to Omaha…
  • 6th: Mississippi junior Drew Pomeranz is just plain nasty; Pomz most recent dominance was against an overmatched Georgia team that was promptly dismantled in a brilliant 8-inning pitching masterpiece that saw him fan 15 of the 28 batters he faced, allowing only 1 run and walking 3; Drew was recently tabbed by Baseball America as it’s Midseason Player of the Year
  • 7th: A week after Virginia junior reliever Tyler Wilson was raked over the coles by NC State, Wilson erased that nightmare by blanking the #2 Georgia Tech Yellowjackets in 3 appearances (Wilson’s Demons Don’t Haunt Him); called in three times over the three game series, Wilson tossed a combined 4.2 shutout innings, allowing no runs and a paltry 2 hits while fanning 9 of the 16 batters he faced from one of the nation’s best offensive lineups…
  • 8th: San Diego senior A.J. Griffin logged 13 K’s in 13 innings that spanned two separate starts over the past week; Griffin sports a 2-3 record over a season that’s had flashes of brilliance, but the “big inning” has been hard for him to avoid in several starts; it’s unclear if any team will take a flyer on Griffin come June…
  • 9th: Florida State junior Tyler Holt with an impressive week, posting a .421 AVG on 8-of-19 hitting with 3 2B’s, 2 HR’s and 8 RBI’s; Holt was tabbed in the preseason by Baseball America as the #46 college prospect; sounds about right, and that lands him somewhere in rounds 2-3…
  • Extra Innings: Coastal Carolina junior Scott Woodward 5 SB’s; UT-Arlington junior Michael Choice 8 BB’s; Rice junior Rick Hague 3 2B’s, 2 HR’s; Wright State senior Casey McGrew 10 H’s, 7 R’s; Arizona State sophomore Riccio Torrez 4 HBP; Texas Tech junior Chad Bettis 2 SV’s; UNC junior Matt Harvey 7IP, 1R; Oklahoma State senior Tyler Lyons 7.2IP, 9K’s; Oregon State junior Greg Peavey CG, 1R, 6K’s; TCU freshman Matt Purke 5IP, 1R, 5K’s…
  • That’s it for this week!
