WHAT'S NEW

USA Baseball recently announced that the 2007 USA National & Junior National Teams will be featured in 2008 Upper Deck products. The first manifestation will be distributed randomly in packs of 2008 Upper Deck Series 2 scheduled to release in late May. Is the box set format dead? Looks that way, but it's still too early to tell. The UD2 Team USA cards may very well be similar to the 2003 inserts found in SP Authentic. As is customary, USA Baseball is mum about the specifics right now. Here's the official press release featuring a sample card from the set (oddly enough, it's Ian Kennedy, a 2004 & 2005 National Team member):

Upper Deck and USA Baseball have entered into an exclusive multi-year trading card licensing agreement. The agreement will allow Upper Deck to feature members of both the USA Baseball National Team and USA Baseball Junior National Team on insert cards in a number of upcoming baseball product releases. The first product to include USA Baseball inserts will be 2008 Upper Deck Series Two which will be released in May.

"We are extremely pleased to have the opportunity to work with USA Baseball again," said Tim Muret, Vice President of Collectibles and Memorabilia for Upper Deck. "The USA Baseball National Teams annually feature some of the game's best prospects. We look forward to sharing this talented group with collectors who enjoy the opportunity of owning tomorrow's superstars today."

The licensing partnership will build upon Upper Deck's previous trading card agreement with baseball's National Governing Body. Upper Deck first manufactured USA Baseball trading cards in 2000. The new partnership also includes the right to manufacture trading cards of the United States Olympic Baseball Team which will compete in the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games.

Other rights Upper Deck obtains under the terms of the agreement include access to game-used equipment and autographs from the USA Baseball National Teams and the Olympic Baseball Team.

"This agreement represents a tremendous opportunity for our organization to continue to grow the USA Baseball brand in the hobby," said David Perkins, Director, Marketing and Licensing for USA Baseball. "Through our previous partnership with Upper Deck we were able to bring the game that much closer to our fans, and we look forward to providing our fans with the opportunity again to collect USA Baseball cards from the industry leader."
