players displaying some power this week as the weather warmed
across the country; most were not the usual suspects:

Hunter
Morris,
Auburn’s reigning SEC Freshman of the Year, doesn’t project to
duplicate his award-winning season during his sophomore
campaign; while his power has progressed, he lags behind in most
other categories; Morris still has over a dozen games left to
catch-up in those other areas, and if this week’s performance is
any indication, he just might…

Arizona State sophomore Matt Newman lacks the pedigree of
Morris, Newman is showing some nice progression; if Newman
continues at his current clip, next year could be a break-out
season…

San Diego
State junior Stephen Strasburg followed-up last week’s
complete game shutout with a less-stellar performance, but still
enough to notch his 9th win of the season to remain a
perfect 9-0; Strasburg went 7-innings, allowing 3 runs on 4 hits
while fanning 14 of the 26 batters he faced; Strasburg owns the
NCAA Division I lead in K’s & K/9IP, and is among the top-5 in
ERA; while it’s unlikely he goes on to break the NCAA record for
K’s in a season (234 – set by Derek Tatsuno of the University of
Hawaii in 1979), his 17.2 ratio is a good bet to break the K/9IP
record of 16.8 set by Ryan Wagner of the University of Houston
in 2003…

Arizona
State junior Mike Leake keeps making it look easy; Leake
notched his group-leading 10th win last week, making
it 10-straight weeks with a victory (that’s every week since day
1)…

With the
June draft looming, Vanderbilt junior Mike Minor is
getting hot at just the right time; Minor’s 13 K outing this
past week is his 4th double-digit strikeout
performance over the last 5 games, the only game not in dubs
during that time was a 9 K effort…
-
A win is a
win, no matter how ugly… that’s Missouri junior Kyle Gibson’s
mantra this week after he logged his 7th win; even
though he gave up 7 earned runs on 9 hits, he was still credited
with the win; he did fan 9 batters though, to keep him among the
NCAA’s top 5 leaders…
-
No Shows: Scott Woodward (3rd week); Victor Sanchez
(4th week); Ryan Berry (5th week);
Josh Thrailkill (6th week); Tommy Medica (presumably
out for the season)…
