WEEKLY COLLEGE UPDATE FOR FORMER TEAM USA PLAYERS

WEEKLY RECAP: 5/11/2009

  • 5/11/2009: Week 12 in the books; 1 week left in the regular season; Important upcoming dates:
    • End of the regular season: May 17th
    • Conference tournaments: May 20th
    • Regionals: May 29th
    • Super-regionals: June 5th
    • MLB Draft: June 9th
    • College World Series: June 13th
  • An old feature that we haven't covered in a while is back: AFLAC Stats; the page link is in the left menu bar...
  • A new feature that we added last week is college stats for the recently announced '09 USA National Team Trials invitees...
  • After tossing his first no-hitter this past Friday, does San Diego State junior Stephen Strasburg have anything left to do? Here’s the highlights from his 2009 resume (courtesy of San Diego State's site):
    • Owns a 11-0 record in 12 starts in 2009.
    • Won his last seven starts and has a 0.90 ERA in his last seven starts (6 ER/60.0 IP).
    • Allowed 0 earned runs in 36 of his last 37 innings pitched and four earned runs total in his last 47 innings of work (0.77 ERA).
    • Pitched his first career no-hitter against Air Force (May 8), with 17 strikeouts. 2 walks shy of a perfect game.
    • Has an active streak of no earned runs allowed in his last 17.2 innings.
    • In six road/neutral starts this season he is 6-0 with a 1.01 ERA (5 ER/44.2 IP).
    • Has a current streak of no earned runs allowed in his last 21 inning pitched on the road.
    • Leads the nation in strikeouts (164), strikeouts per nine innings (16.9) and ranks second in ERA, third in wins and seventh in hits alowed per nine innings.
    • Struck out at least 11 batters in 11 of his 12 starts this season.
    • Has allowed two earned runs or fewer in 12 of his last 13 starts dating back to last season.
    • Issued two walks or fewer in 24 of his 25 career starts.
    • Had a streak of 57 consecutive innings where he allowed one run or fewer broken in the seventh inning of his April 24 start vs. TCU.
    • Won last nine home decisions dating back to last season.
    • Has 70 strikeouts in his last five starts covering a span of 39 innings.
    • Pitched a 23 strikeout game last season.
  • After Strasburg, the “next best” line of pitchers starts with Arizona State junior Mike Leake; Leake notched his 12th win this past week, making it a win in each and every week since opening day; Leake sports a paltry 1.47 ERA and 104 K’s compared to only 18 walks over 97.2 innings; any other year, Leake would top the list of most dominating pitchers in division I baseball; but this is the Year of Stras…
  • Also appearing on that “next best” list is Missouri junior Kyle Gibson; Gibson stood-out as a statistical oddity this week when I compared this week’s statline to last weeks; Déjà vu? Check out his statline from last week and compare it to this week below…
  • With only 1 more start left to finish his college career (assuming he signs when drafted next month), Vanderbilt junior Mike Minor is looking to go out on a strong note; he started his statement this past week with a complete game win, logging double-digit K’s; a couple of impressive outings to finish the year should put him on the bubble to break into the late 1st round…
  • Red-shirt Clemson sophomore Josh Thrailkill made his 3rd appearance of the season and first since March; Thrailkill went one inning giving up no runs and allowing 1 hit…
  • San Diego junior A.J. Griffin logged his 2nd straight complete game; but this week’s outcome stood in stark contrast to the loss he suffered last week; while last week Griffin allowed 7 earned runs on 7 hits, this week he only gave up 1 earned run on 5 hits, fanning 8 and issuing just 1 walk…
  • UNC sophomore Matt Harvey is anxiously awaiting the end of the regular season next week; Harvey definitely experienced a “sophomore slump”; this past week he allowed 8 earned runs, the third week this year he allowed 7 or more, while posting an ERA of 13.85, the fourth time this year he had a weekly ERA of 9.00 or higher; touted as an “ace in coming” for UNC after a remarkable freshman campaign, Harvey’s follow-up has been less stellar than expected; keep an eye on him during off-season summer league play, possibly in the Cape Cod League, to get a feel for what to expect next season when he’s draft-eligible…
  • This year’s crop of USA Alumni hitters have, as a group, largely disappointed; one of the exceptions is Fresno State junior Tommy Mendonca; Mendonca’s power has really started to take-off as of late as he notched his 9th and 10th round-trippers over the past month; Mendonca’s 22 total HR’s this season far outpaces Auburn sophomore Hunter Morris and his 12 HR’s; and when comparing the group’s offensive numbers from 2008 to this year, Mendonca is one of the few to actually make significant progress; after the end of the regular season we’ll be posting everyone’s 2008 numbers in a comparison chart with the final 2009 numbers…
  • One of the other players to make a significant leap forward is Arizona junior Dwight Childs; Childs went from relative obscurity last year to being in the discussion as a potential, but still unlikely, first-day draftee (rounds 1 through supplemental 3rd); may not sound as crazy as you might think, due exclusively to Childs playing a premium position (catcher)…
  • Don't forget, cumulative season statistics are now located on a different page; click the link in the menu bar on the left...
  • There's so much more that we just can't get to, but the weekly stats below and cumulative season stats HERE should give you an idea of who else is hot and who's not; check back next week for more updates...

  • Check out our ebay store as we carry several of the players featured below and will be listing much more throughout the upcoming weeks leading up to the draft!
