San Diego
State junior Stephen Strasburg followed-up last
week’s no-hitter in less-stellar fashion; Strasburg notched his
12th win of the year to remain a perfect 12-0 by
going 7 innings, allowing 2 runs on 6 hits, walking 1 while
fanning 10; this marks the 12th start out of 13 that
Strasburg logged double-digit K’s in a game this year; with just
over 3 weeks until the draft, the #1 selection is seemingly just
a formality; but don’t expect to see Strasburg in a minor league
uniform too soon, as negotiations are expected to last all the
way up to the August deadline…

Arizona
State junior Mike Leake did it; he notched his 13th
win in as many weeks; that’s a win in each and every week since
the season began “way back” in February; and he closed the
regular season in style, tossing a complete game shutout; Leake
went the distance allowing only 3 hits and walking none while
fanning 12; surprisingly, Leake isn’t generating a ton of draft
buzz, although BA predicts he’ll go #11 overall to Colorado…
-
Missouri
junior Kyle Gibson didn’t see much action this past week;
Gibson’s scheduled start on Friday was cancelled due to
inclement weather, and he was lifted after just 1 inning of late
relief on Sunday; BA is pretty high on Gibson, predicting a #4
overall selection to the Pirates and puts him on the fast-track
to the majors…
-
After a
remarkable start to the season that saw him pitch 3 straight
complete games, 2 of which were shutouts and a 3rd
allowing no earned runs, Rice junior Ryan Berry finished
the year with 2 straight wins; after spending over 5 weeks on
the DL, Berry completed the season with 3 starts in 4
appearances; over those 4 games, Berry pitched 20 innings,
allowing 5 runs on 18 hits, walking 5 and fanning 18; that was
good for 2 wins and a no-decision; BA doesn’t have Berry popping
in the 1st round in their recent mock…

Oklahoma
State junior Andrew Oliver, most famous for his
court-case against the NCAA, is gaining some pre-draft hype
after BA predicted him to go #22 overall to the Twins; Oliver
doesn’t exactly have gaudy stats, as his 5-6 record and 5.58 ERA
attest; with this high of a prediction and those fringy stats, I
decided to do some research as to why BA would be so high on
Oliver, and here’s the best report I could find:
o
Perhaps the top collegiate lefty, Oliver has that
great projectable size that scouts just love. He stands at 6'3" and
seems to have little to no effort when he is on the mound. He
features a low 90's fastball and he is developing a change and a
slurve. It is not necessarily his repertoire that is great, but the
command he has and how he attacks hitters. He is not afraid to go
inside on guys and controls the strike zone really well, leading to
great strikeout numbers.

USC
junior Grant Green is the only bat from the 2008 USA National
Team to make BA’s 1st round draft mock; this is not too
surprising as it has certainly been a down year for college bats;
Green has had somewhat of a “down” year as well; mind you, the
.374/.439/.579–4-30 doesn’t look bad, but Green had been projected
to develop much more power, especially after last year’s
.390/.438/.644-9-46 and a very strong showing in the Cape Cod League
over the summer; a slow start had many saying he wouldn’t pop in the
first round, but Green rebounded and hit stride after the 3rd
week; it remains to be seen if the Padres are still high enough on
him and his likely price tag, a la agent Scott Boras, to plunk down
the money it’s going to take to draft him at #3…
·
Fresno State junior Tommy Mendonca continues to get no draft
love, but he still continues to knock the ball out of the park; this
past week, Mendonca logged another multi-HR week (8 out of the 13
weeks of the season) with 2 more jacks to bring his yearly total to
24; the reason for his draft disrespect? 55 K’s in 207 AB’s…
