WEEKLY RECAP:
5/25/2009 |

5/25/2009: Week 14 in the books; some conferences, such as the
PAC-10, do not have conference tournaments, so those players
continued with the regular season this past week; Important upcoming dates:
-
End of
the regular season: May 24th is the final day for all
schools regardless of conference
-
Conference tournaments: May 20th for those participating
-
Regionals:
May 29th
-
Super-regionals:
June 5th
-
MLB Draft: June 9th
-
College
World Series: June 13th
-

An old feature
that we haven't covered in a while is back: AFLAC Stats;
the page link is in the left menu bar...

few weeks ago is college stats for the '09 USA National Team Trials invitees...

San Diego
State junior Stephen Strasburg finished the regular
season by giving beltway baseball fans a collective cold chill
down their spine; Strasburg was removed from the game after 7.2
IP, holding his back as he left the mound; the apparent "injury"
was downplayed immediately after the game by Strasburg who
stated it was just "back cramps" due to inadequate fluids in the
Texas heat; there's no reason to doubt this claim as Stras
remained in the dugout during the rest of the game and met with
reporters after congratulating his teammates on the win;
however, there was no denying that this was not the Stras that
has showed up all season, going 7.2 IP, allowing 3 hits, 1 walk
and 6 strikeouts; this was only the 2nd time all year that he
notched less than 10 K's; obviously, he pitched an effective
game, but scouts at the game reported his stuff to be "less than
dominating", with several hitters making contact; guess we'll
all find out Friday when SDSU makes their first post-season
appearance of the century with Strasburg taking the mound...

Out there in
the desert of Nevada lurks the heir-apparent to the reins of
Stephen Strasburg's circus-like draft hype; in a few weeks we'll
be exploring this prospect; he goes by the name of Bryce
Harper...

Fresno State
junior Tommy Mendonca added to his ridiculous power
numbers this past week, going yard 3 times in the WAC tournament
to give him 27 jacks on the year; in a down year for college
bats, Mendonca has been one of the few exceptions; but his 60
K's in 260 AB's will likely keep him out of the 1st round next
month...

Rice junior
Ryan Berry, sidelined for over 6 weeks after a dominating
4-0 start that included 3 complete games of which 2 were
complete game shutouts, ended the regular season in a similar
dominating fashion; Berry went the distance allowing just 1 run
on 2 hits, striking out 7 batters and issuing just 2 walks;
dismissed from 1st round consideration after languishing on the
DL, Berry could feasibly be a surprise in the late first round
or sandwich round; definitely one to keep an eye on...
