The second
week of college baseball is in the books...
San Diego
junior Stephen Strasburg is proving that the hype is
justified; after two starts the young phenom has pitched 12.1
innings and has rung-up 27 batters en-route to a 2-0 record with
a 1.46 ERA; Stasburg opened the year with a 5.2 inning 3-hit gem
that saw him strike out 11 while allowing no earned runs; start
number two saw 6.2 IP with 16 (yes, SIXTEEN) K's as he faced 25
batters, however Strasburg showed he was mortal as he gave up 2
earned runs on 5 hits; this will be an exciting college baseball
season if for no other reason than following Strasburg's march
toward the record books...
Another gem
was seen on the campus of Rice University as junior Ryan
Berry tossed the year's first complete game shutout; Berry
went the full 9, facing 29 batters, striking out 12 and allowing
only 2 hits while walking none...
Arizona State
junior Mike Leake picked up his 2nd straight win going 8
IP, fanning a cool 10, walking 1, but allowing no runs, earned
or otherwise...
Tyler Wilson,
Virginia's sophomore righty (not the Red Sox '08 draftee of the
same name as I've been told more than once by his mom), notched
his first win of the year out of 3 relief appearances (2 this
past week that saw him K 9 of 20 batters while allowing 2 hits
but no runs)...
