This wraps-up
the sixth week of the 2009 college baseball season and marks the
halfway point in regular season play…
-
San Diego
State junior Stephen Strasburg continues his dominance
with an 8-inning outing that saw him face 27 batters, fanning
14, allowing 2 earned runs on 3 hits, 1 of which was a homerun;
this was only the 2nd time all year someone went yard
on Strasburg; nevertheless, he picked up his fifth win and is
one week closer to being announce by the Washington Nationals as
the #1 overall draft pick in June…

Just down the
road from Tony Gwynn Stadium, San Diego junior A.J. Griffin
is quietly assembling an impressive season; this past week
Griffin notched his 4th win as he went 7.2 IP,
allowing 3 runs on 10 hits while fanning 8 and walking 5; not
all that much to write home about, but Griffin has been getting
it done each and every week and now sits on a 4-1 record with a
paltry 2.30 ERA to go with 36 K’s in 31.1 IP…

Arizona
State junior Mike Leake logged his group-leading 6th
win after going 8 innings, allowing 1 run on 4 hits, fanning 4
and walking 1 to give him a 1.31 ERA on the year…

Vanderbilt
junior Mike Minor had his best outing of the year last
week; notably MIA from the highlights so far, Minor may now be
starting to hit his groove; this past Friday he tossed 7
innings, allowing 2 runs on 5 hits, striking out 11 of 24
batters faced and walking 2…

Another
surprise was Oklahoma State junior Andrew Oliver’s
complete game win; Oliver fanned 14 while allowing 2 runs on 7
hits to give him his 4th win against 2 losses on the
year…

During the
first few weeks of the season, the lack of power among the group
was concerning; over the past few weeks, a couple of names have
emerged; Fresno State junior Tommy Mendonca just posted
his third straight multi-homerun weeks and fourth out of the six
weeks he has played this year; Mendonca went 8-for-15 on the
week with 2 2B’s, 3 HR’s, 8 RBI’s and 1 SB; Mendonca now leads
the group with 11 HR’s, 30 RBI’s, 66 total bases and a 0.759 SLG%...

California
junior Blake Smith put together a nice week; Smith went
8-for-16 with 2 2B’s, 1 HR, 6 RBI’s, 7 BB’s, 2 K’s, 1 SB & 1 HBP…
only missed a triple…

Coastal
Carolina sophomore Scott Woodward has earned the
reputation as the speedster of the group; this week Woodward
swiped 3 bases in 4 attempts giving him 18-of-21 on the year; he
also went 8-for-15 at the plate with 1 2B and 1 RBI while only
fanning once…

Josh Fellhauer is doing good things at Cal-State Fullerton; his
0.429 BAVG leads the team as does his 33 hits…
