This wraps-up
the seventh week of the 2009 college baseball season and we're
well on our way to the end of regular season play…
-
Amazingly
enough, San Diego
State junior Stephen Strasburg combined on his 1st
shutout of the season; what's even more remarkable is that his
"poorest" outing of the year was the one that netted him the
shutout... Strasburg pitched 6 innings allowing only 3 hits while
walking 2 and fanning 6 batters, the first outing ALL YEAR he failed
to log double digit strikeouts... go figure...

What else does
a guy have to do? Missouri junior Kyle Gibson bounces
back from a bad start with a gem, but winds up on the losing
end; this past Friday Gibson logged a complete game against
rival Oklahoma, pitching 9 innings of 6-hit-baseball, allowing 2
runs while fanning 15 and issuing only 1 walk; but with only 1
run from Mizzou's offense, it wasn't enough to get the win...

Arizona State
junior Mike Leake notched his 7th win of the season,
giving him a win in every week since the season began; from the
looks of things, there's going to be a glut of pitcher's in the
1st-round of the MLB Draft come June...

After 2
"no-decisions" and a loss to begin the year, San Diego junior
A.J. Griffin has come on strong; Griffin has won 5 of the
last 6 games that he has appeared in, the only glitch being a
"no-decision" two weeks ago...

Oregon State
junior Kevin Rhoderick has a weird stat; over each of the
last 6 weeks, his weekly ERA has been: 9.00, 0.00, 9.00, 0.00,
0.00, 18.00... truly feast or famine...
-
No Show's: 3rd straight week
without an appearance by Clemson sophomore Josh Thrailkill...
2nd week for Rice junior Ryan Berry... 2nd week for
Baylor sophomore Shawn Tolleson... 4th week for Santa
Clara junior Tommy Medica (reportedly out of the
season)...

At the beginning of the year,
not many people were thinking much, if anything, about Arizona
junior catcher Dwight Childs; but Childs is making people
take notice as his string of "hot weeks" keeps growing; since
starting the season 2-for-11, Childs' average has increased each
week, with the exception of one; here's his weekly cumulative
average: 0.000, 0.182, 0.292, 0.333, 0.308, 0.383, 0.397; Childs
is picking the right time to get hot as we head into the final
weeks as MLB draft-boards are starting to get put together; and
Childs' premium position puts him in a whole different class; if
he keeps up his current clip, there's a good chance he could
break in the first 3 to 5 rounds...

After more than 3 weeks
without a dinger, Miami freshman Harold Martinez belted 3
just this week!

Fresno State junior Tommy
Mendonca notched his 12th round-tripper of the year and sits
atop the group in power production this year...

California junior Blake
Smith and Auburn sophomore Hunter Morris share a
distant second place on the HR Leader Board with 6 each...
-
