3/22/2010:
Week 5 ...all of the
headlines here in this week’s “9-INNINGS”…
·
1st:
Although not as spectacular this week, both components of UCLA's
sophomore ace-tandem, Gerrit Cole and Trevor Bauer,
notched their 4th and 5th wins of the year, respectively; Cole
tossed 7 innings allowing 2 runs on 5 hits while fanning 8, as
Bauer threw 8 innings and allowed 1 run on 5 hits while fanning
9; both retain perfect records...
·
2nd:
"Who says I gotta start to get some wins?" When I saw that
Florida sophomore Nick Maronde notched 2 wins in one week
allowing only 1 run combined, I quickly scanned the rest of his
stats to see if he had logged a shutout or better; imagine my
surprise when I saw that he had only pitched a combined 3.2
innings for both games; Maronde was awarded 2 wins, both in
relief roles...
·
3rd:
Auburn junior Hunter Morris turned in a spectacular week;
10-for-22, 1 2B, 4 HR's, 14 RBI, 2 SB; Morris has really emerged
this year after a mostly forgettable sophomore campaign plagued
by minor injuries; at this pace, Morris is back on-track to
crack the 1st round...
·
4th:
CS-Fullerton junior Christian Colon had largely
disappointed during the summer and the first few weeks of this
season; but after a monster week folks are starting to talk of a
turnaround; Colon matched Hunter Morris's 4 jacks on 8-for-21
hitting, 1 2B, 7 RBI and 2 SB; it remains to be seen if Colon
can get consistent now...
·
5th:
Florida freshman Austin Maddox is starting to get regular
copy on "9 Innings"; as the frosh has cemented his status as the
starting catcher on a surprisingly good SEC team, he's done it
with the bat; his .367 AVG is good enough for 2nd best on the
team while he leads the team in HR's (6), RBI's (27) and SLG%
(.671); his .983 Fielding% is pretty good, too, as he had only
committed 1 error all year...
·
6th:
Keeping the theme of "players with something to prove" alive, we
now look to UNC junior Matt Harvey; his most recent win
has been his most impressive, allowing 2 hits in 7 shutout
innings, fanning 11 and walking 4; those 11 K's gives him 37 in
32 IP on the year to help keep him a perfect 3-0 with a 1.97 ERA
to boot...
·
7th:
Coastal Carolina junior Cody Wheeler was this week's
"Strikeout Artist", fanning 12 in 7-innings, but was
paradoxically one of the worst pitchers of the week; although
Wheeler struck out 12 of the 27 batters he faced, 5 of the
remaining 13 scored to slap him with a 6.43 weekly ERA; and that
didn't help his 4.36 yearly ERA any; at least he got a
no-decision to keep that 3-0 record intact...
·
8th:
Georgia sophomore Cecil Tanner was recently ranked among
BA's Top 100 College Prospects for the 2011 MLB Draft; however,
Tanner has struggled, basically since day one this year; his
most recent outing was ugly, pulled after the 1st inning that
saw him allow 5 runs; last week it was 2 runs in 2 innings,
before that it was 6 runs in 1.2 innings, and the two prior
starts were unremarkable...
·
9th:
"Things I Highlighted On My Spreadsheet" - The Citadel junior
Asher Wojciechowski 11K's/8IP; (2) Combined-on Shutouts 1.
Mississippi junior Drew Pomeranz (9K's/6IP), 2. Arizona
State sophomore Jordan Swagerty (also logged 3 saves);
Arizona State sophomore Riccio Torrez 3 2B's; Arizona
freshman Robert Refsnyder 11 Hits, 10 RBI's; Georgia Tech
junior Derek Dietrich 3 HR's; UT-Arlington junior
Michael Choice 4 SB's...

That’s it
for this week! There’s so much more that we just can’t get to,
but you should be able to get a good idea of who was hot and who
was not with the weekly stats below (cumulative
season statistics are located on another page);
we started a blog a few weeks ago that offers some additional
content that is updated throughout the week, you can
check it out here; and we
just added a link to our ebay inventory that's continually being
added-to at the bottom of this page (the search box below is
currently being "beta tested", so no guarantees on that yet; thanks for tuning in and check back often as we have a ton of
new content being created for the site for the new season…
