2010 WEEKLY COLLEGE STATS COMMENTARY

  • 3/29/2010: WEEK 6 news & notes here in “9-INNINGS”…
  • 1st: Although we usually reserve our 9-Innings commentary for college players, there’s a couple of prep pitchers that have to get on your radar now; The Woodlands High School (Texas) righthanded pitching phenom Jameson Taillon has started his case for 1.1 in this year’s MLB Draft; the 6’7”, 230 lb. senior tossed a no-hitter this past Wednesday (3/24), striking out 19, in one of the most dominating prep pitching performances of the year; not to be outdone, Royal High School (California) junior righty Cody Buckel came within one walked batter of perfect game, tossing a no-no and striking out 10; Buckel is committed to Pepperdine, but all indicators point to an early exit from the draft board in 2011…
  • 2nd: Texas-Arlington junior Michael Choice receives this week’s Masher Award; 7-for-14 with 4 HR’s, 7 RBI and 5 BB’s; however, Choice received only an “Honorable Mention” for Southland Conference Hitter of the Week… now that must be a true power conference when a guy with a week like Choice’s is only good enough for HM ; )
  • 3rd: Southern Nevada freshman Bryce Harper getting it done; one week after Harper failed to log any round-trippers, this week he launches four; Harper retains the group lead in HR’s with 12 overall…
  • 4th: Santa Clara junior Tommy Medica, a catcher (a position typically not known for speed), logged 4 stolen-bases this week! Medica is not averse to swiping a base, on the contrary, he’s a perfect 9-for-9 this year; but the new-found speed is surprising considering the red-shirt junior swiped a total of 6 bases in his freshman and sophomore years combined…
  • 5th: UNC junior Matt Harvey suffered a tough loss this past week; Harvey pitched 7-innings, allowing only 2 runs (1 earned) on 3 hits, striking out 11 while walking 6; it’s Harvey’s first loss of the year and is only a technical set-back as it was a stellar outing along the same lines as his previous 3 starts; on the year, Harvey is 3-1 with a 1.85 in 39 IP with 48 K’s and 20 BB’s…
  • 6th: The Citadel junior Asher Wojciechowski has been quietly putting together a remarkable year; this past week “Woz” notched his 6th win in as many starts, giving him an overall 2.70 ERA with 59 K’s and 14 BB’s in 40 IP; those numbers stand in stark contrast to his sophomore overall stats of 3-3, 4.39 ERA, 69.2 IP, 75 K’s, 34 BB’s…
  • 7th: Vanderbilt sophomore Sonny Gray hasn’t done much to draw attention to himself this year; Gray just keeps on an even keel, churning out quality starts (with the exception of his 3rd start); this week was an exception as Gray tossed seven scoreless innings en-route to his first combined-on-shutout, giving up only 4 hits, fanning 6 batters and walking 3; for his efforts, Gray was announced as the SEC Pitcher of the Week…
  • 8th: Mississippi junior Drew Pomeranz logged a quality start this past week; Pomz tossed 7.1 IP, giving up 1 run on 5 hits, striking out 9 while walking just 2 batters; on the year, Drew has 58 K’s in 38.2 IP and his 1.6 K/IP ratio is best among the group’s pitchers with at least 20 innings…
  • 9th: Florida State junior Tyler Holt hit for the cycle this weekend against Maryland; what’s even more remarkable is that he hit it in order! That’s right, a single, double, triple and home-run to cap the cycle; Holt is the first FSU player to hit for the cycle since alum Stephen Drew in 2005…
  • Extra Innings: Will the real Pepitone please stand up? Apologies due to Tulane junior Nick Pepitone; seems that Pepitone shares a similar last name to fellow pitcher Matt Petiton; when compiling the Weekly Update over the first four weeks, we inadvertently were reporting Petiton’s stats under Pepitone’s heading; so, to right the ship, we’re giving a shout out to the real Pepitone (4-0, 1.96, 18.1 IP, 13 K’s, 6 BB’s ) who’s head-and-shoulders above imposter Petiton (1-2, 3.90, 30 IP, 21 K’s, 10 BB’s)...
  • That’s it for this week! There’s so much more that we just can’t get to, but you should be able to get a good idea of who was hot and who was not with the weekly stats below (cumulative season statistics are located on another page); we started a blog a few weeks ago that offers some additional content that is updated throughout the week, you can check it out here; and we just added a link to our ebay inventory that's continually being added-to at the bottom of this page (the search box below is currently being "beta tested", so no guarantees on that yet; thanks for tuning in and check back often as we have a ton of new content being created for the site for the new season…
