2010 WEEKLY COLLEGE STATS COMMENTARY

  • 4/5/2010: WEEK 7 news & notes here in “9-INNINGS”…
  • 1st: Leading off this week is The Citadel junior RHP Asher Wojciechowski; “Woz” notched his 7th consecutive win in 7 consecutive starts this week, tossing 8-innings, giving up 2 runs on 5 hits, striking out 9 and walking 2; on the year, Woz has a 2.62 ERA and 68 K’s versus 16 BB’s; back in early February, Baseball America ranked Wojciechowski the #71 college prospect for the 2010 MLB Draft, but we’re betting he would rank just a bit higher now; can’t fault BA, though, as Asher was 3-3 with a 4.39 ERA last year after battling an oblique strain for several weeks...
  • 2nd: Oregon State junior RHP Greg Peavey tossed a gem this week but got his fourth no-decision of the year as his run support stayed home; his line: 7IP, 1 ER, 3 H, 10 K’s, 3 BB’s;  Peavey is 2-0 in six starts but his 2.13 ERA and .185 opposition batting average belie his record and he has yet to surrender a long-ball or a triple...
  • 3rd: TCU freshman lefty Matt Purke has had several impressive outings this year peppered with three starts he would like to forget; in those three starts, Purke surrendered three or more runs within the first three innings; one of those starts occurred last week when he gave up four runs in 2 1/3 innings; each time, though, Purke righted the ship the next week and this week was no exception as he tossed 7.1 innings, allowing 1 run on 3 hits, striking out 10 and walking 3; it was the first double-digit strikeout game Purke has pitched this year, before coming close by fanning 8 three times...
  • 4th: Coastal Carolina junior Cody Wheeler notched a solid win this week; Wheeler went 7-innings allowing 1 run on 2 hits, fanning 10 while walking 3; it was the second time he logged double digit K’s this year, ringing up 12 two weeks ago; Wheeler is 5-0 with a 3.72 ERA and 48 strikeouts in 46 IP...
  • 5th: Georgia Tech junior Derek Dietrich went 7-for-20 with a 2B, 3 HR’s, and 10 RBI’s on the week; over the past 3 weeks Dietrich has logged 8 of his 9 total HR’s and 24 of his 35 total RBI’s so it’s safe to say he’s been “heating up”; BA ranked Dietrich as the #41 college prospect for the upcoming draft...
  • 6th: Santa Clara junior Tommy Medica keeps putting up solid numbers week after week; his worst performance was a 4-for-12 (0.333) effort with a double, HR and 6 RBI’s that he posted during the 3rd week; this week, Medica was 7-for-15 with 3 2B’s, 2 HR’s, 4 RBI’s and 2 SB’s; although BA did not rank him in their preseason Top College Prospects List, Medica plays a premium position and we feel he’s at least 3rd to 5th round draft-worthy...
  • 7th: After a largely disappointing year so far, Coastal Carolina junior Scott Woodward is hoping this past week is a primer for the rest of the year; Woodward’s 7-for-12 showing improved his .257 AVG to .302, the first time he’s been above .300 this year; injuries limited his production last year and may be the reason for his sluggish start; the one element not missing is Woodward’s speed; this week he swiped 5 bases to bring his yearly total to 21...
  • 8th: Although we’re reporting Bryce Harper as not having played this past week, that is false; credit that to slow reporting by his college as he played in 4 games toward the end of last week; over the course of those 4 games, Harper went 5-for-13, scoring 6 runs, 2 RBI’s and swiping 5 bases; sorry, no tape-measure HR’s this week...
  • 9th: “Other Hitters Highlighted in My Spreadsheet”à Arkansas junior Andy Wilkins 10 RBI’s; Clemson sophomore Brad Miller 8 Hits; Miami sophomore Harold Martinez 2 HR’s; LSU junior Micah Gibbs 9 Hits; CS Fullerton junior Christian Colon 8 Hits, 2 HR’s...
  • That’s it for this week! There’s so much more that we just can’t get to, but you should be able to get a good idea of who was hot and who was not with the weekly stats below (cumulative season statistics are located on another page); we started a blog a few weeks ago that offers some additional content that is updated throughout the week, you can check it out here; and we just added a link to our ebay inventory that's continually being added-to at the bottom of this page with search functionality; thanks for tuning in and check back often as we keep turning out new content for the new season…
